Tunng were playing on a Tuesday night at The East Brunswick Club, definitely not our favourite night to venture out, nor our favourite venue to photograph in and put into the mix that Melbourne was in the midst of a cold snap so we weren’t terribly enthused, but we had heard they were definitely worth a look and so off we trekked across town for a look.

We walked into a jam packed room filled with a wide spectrum of punters ranging from teens wearing their flower power homemade crowns to hip bored looking baby boomers.

The curtains opened and there they were, a sextet of two guitarists, a drummer, a percussionist who played everything from maracas and shakers to a triangle, a Buddhist prayer bowel, bells, and a homemade wind chime of keys; as well as a guy on synth and keyboard, and front and centre was a small sparkling songstress you could almost fit in your pocket.

The next hour and a half can only be explained as some sort of synthesized pop-folk explosion. The entire audience swayed as the band hit every chord and sound in perfect synch. At one point an entire song was simply the sound of hands rubbing together, the audience went off!

A piano flute found its way on stage twice and we were exhausted just watching the lead guitarist  who never stopped jumping, gyrating and throwing himself around the entire performance.  At one stage the percussionist had every limb operating a noise maker, in one hand two maracas, in the other a drumstick beating a triangle and his feet operating a wind chime of keys. Just wild…

The teen audience bounced and the rest of the house swayed as though in some sort of trance, the performance as visually captivating as it was breathtaking sonically.  The Melbourne crowd totally got into a very sexy song dedicated to weekends in Australia, Weekend Away, off their latest album, “…And Then We Saw Land“.

It was clear that Tunng get the Oz vibe totally.

We could tell Tunng was coming to a close as the already petite singer took off her bright yellow stilettos and the beers on stage were well and truly empty, but they finished the gig with a totally kick arse encore which left everyone wanting more…more… and just more…

If you want that electro-psychedelic hippy rock grooving in your butt experience Tunng.

...And Then We Saw Land
